Wreckless Eric Radio Show #23 (click to tune in)

Life after the exploding woodburner. Spinning records and being vigilant with The Tripwires, The Sgt Major III, Donovan, Tarka Cordell, Les Aiglons, Buffalo Daughter, Noel Chiboust et sa Grande Formation, Yo La Tengo, Englebert Humperdink... A show with something to irritate everyone!

Hey, Eric - as usual, a brilliant show...thx. You made my day...I was having a fairly lousy day at work. A spotlight on the festering Seattle scene is always appreciated....& man, I can't believe you played ol' Engelbert!

Eric. Great Show. When I go to the Playlist I see dates but not show numbers. I didn't see a date of February 1st (isn't that when this show came out) and anyway, I wanted to find out more about Tarka Cordel (spelling?) because that was amazing. He sounded a bit like you actually. Anyway, is this playlist up?

I'm afraid I'm a bit disorganised with the playlists - it's difficult enough actually getting the shows together! Glad you like the Tarka Cordell track - he's the son of Denny Cordell the producer. The album is on the Room 609 label and I think it's out now.
And Erica - I'm glad you appreciated Englebert. That one was written by his manager Gordon Mills. I'd like to think Gilbert O'Sullivan was babysitting the kids at the time, whilst being ripped off blind, but the time frame doesn't quite fit. Not that I want to think of old Gilbert being ripped off, I've turned into a bit of a retrogressive fan and if I had any Gilbert O'Sullivan records I'd play them.

Hey, Eric - No Gilbert? Really? I can send some over to you if you like...

Thanks for playing Tarka's track. It sounded great. We haven't got the record out yet, but will do this year. We're gonna release a 10 track album with 10 covers.
Maybe you'd like to do one!? I know TC woulda liked that.

Thanks for the great show - lot of acts I'd never heard before. Sitting here listening in Southern California dreaming of East Yorkshire - Really? You must be bloody joking.

I remember my sister being a big Gilbert O Sullivan fan, though I believe she had an album of his songs but they were being performed by someone else. (In that whole TOTPs compilations style). It seems bizarre now to think that an artist would be successful and some anonymous guy would then come along and record a whole album's worth of his songs and release it.

Why did anyone go out and buy the anonymous guy's version when there would've been a proper album available at the same time sung by the actual artist? I suppose because it was cheaper and times was hard back in the early 70s!

And talking of being ripped off, wasn't Gilbert O one of the first people to sue for having his music sampled? He won that one in court and led to hip hop artists and the like then having to clear all samples before releasing their records.

That's probably enough GOS trivia for one lifetime.

I did a whole show back about cheap cover versions and Top Of The Pops albums back in September - show #15. It's still there along with all the other shows.
By the end of that show I was having trouble telling which was which - my judgement was seriously impaired by TOTP albums.
I didn't know Gilbert won a case involving sampling - I thought he just won the right to not have his life controlled by Gordon Mills. At the height of his fame he was apparently babysitting the Mills children, and if the News Of The World were to be believed he was doing it because he needed the extra cash.

And while I'm at it - why am I getting all this retarded shit on here about viagra and stuff? I keep deleting it because I've got a reputation to preserve. Well, that's not strictly true, I hope I haven't got a reputation, but I don't need viagra. As yet.

Hi Eric
I have finally caught up with backlog of shows I have missed. This one I really enjoyed. Tarka Cordell was great and nice to hear Donovan. I like all the cheesy inserts, it reminds me of how the radio sounded when I was a kid in the early 60's.
Hearing Telstar reminded me of my driving instructor who used to play in a Tornado's style band. He was the drummer and once popped a tape into the cassette player of a gig they had done. I think he had the tape recorder on his lap as all I could hear was what sounded like a child banging on a bisciut tin while an distorted organ sound could be just heard way off somewhere. I then had to pull over half-sharpish so he could lean out the car and be sick. Not sure if that was because of my driving or if he was just embarrased about the tape.
Looking forward to the next show
regards
Nick

Hello Eric…Every week you get me sleuthing around for some disc or other you’ve played – this week it was Les Aiglons’ Stalactite. 33s & 45s, eh? Anyway, now you’re a tax exile living the dream in France, recording your Exile On Main Street, how often do you get back to England to play your intimate gigs in peoples front rooms? I’d love to have you and Amy come over later in the year and help me celebrate my birthday.
